Recoil and Subsonic Capability 10mm Vs. 45 ACP

fall turkey season ny 2020

A few years ago, I published an article comparing subsonic power and recoil of the.45 ACP and 10mm pistols. The article was well-received by the gun community. Both handguns are comparable in size, weight and advertised muzzle speed. Below are the pros and con's of each handgun. Before making a final decision, it is important to consider the speed and range of each gun.

10mm recoil is akin to a 357 Magnum

The feeling of a 10mm Magnum is almost identical to that felt from a 357 Magnum. Both have a similar amount of muzzle energy, but the 10mm has the slight edge in energy, while the 357 has a longer bullet and greater penetration power. It is important to note that there are some differences between these calibers.

The recoil is the most significant difference between the rifles. If you are looking to use a 10mm auto, you should choose one with a low recoil level. While the 357 Magnum has an advantage in velocity, the 10mm will have a lower one. You will get only one shot off the higher your recoil level. Also, the 10mm has a smaller case capacity which limits its effectiveness in self-defense.

Subsonic vs. 45 ACP vs. 10mm

Although subsonic loads may be similar in size and capacity, their performance is different. It is up to you to decide which round makes the best conceal carry hunting rounds. Knowing the difference between the two types of rounds will help you choose which one to use. You will also notice a difference in the bullet size between the 45 ACP or 10mm cases. Semi-auto and single-shot versions are both available. Single-shot actions, however, are quieter.

Both cartridges can be used to hunt deer-sized game but the 10mm is better for self-defense. The 10mm cartridge is an effective bear defense cartridge. While this caliber offers higher recoil than the other two, well-trained shooters can handle it without much difficulty. If you are a beginner or just want to improve your marksmanship skills, the 45 ACP is for you.

Recoil is harsher

Both calibers have similar recoil but the larger, more soft 10mm produces a louder retort. This caliber also has a lower muzzle flash which can help you acquire targets. The recoil energy from the 45mm or 10mm rounds does not differ, nor do they have a kick and muzzle flip.

The difference between the recoil from a 10mm revolver versus a 45mm revolver's is negligible compared with the differences in the flange lengths of the two cartridges. At 50 yards, the difference between the two revolvers is 0.3 inches, and at 100 yards, it's 1.1 inches. The difference between the revolvers isn't significant enough to make a big difference.

Handguns chambered for.45 ACP carry fewer rounds

The main difference in handguns for.45 ACP versus.45 Super is the heavier bullets used by the former. To achieve higher speeds, the 45 super uses thicker casings with a higher pressure powder. Although this reduces the number of rounds that can be carried, the 45 super's bullet is much more powerful and can fly faster than an average bullet. This makes it better for home defense.

The difference is not important. Gen. John T. Thompson selected the.45 ACP as his choice of cartridge after the.38 Long Colt failed to impress him during their Philippine-American War. The.45 ACP is also less popular than the.38 Long Colt, which is used most NATO militaries.
