Douglas Mawson's Arctic Survival Story

The Antarctic continent is a harsh place and no man has ever been more alone than Douglas Mawson, who made it his goal to explore it in 1907. Mawson was born in Yorkshire (England) and moved to Australia when he was a teenager. He studied at the University of Sydney. After graduating from the University of Adelaide, he was made a lecturer and joined Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1907-09 expedition. While on the expedition, Ernest Shackleton led the first party to the South Magnetic Pole. Also, they climbed Mount Erebus, which is a 3794m high peak.

How To

How to hunt wild hogs

Wild hogs are large animals found in North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Wild hogs are omnivores; they eat vegetation and small animals such as rabbits, mice, birds, insects, and fish. They feed mostly at night. One piglet is born after the gestation period of approximately six months. A sow gives birth every two years. Wild hogs are often solitary but can live in groups known as herds.

Wild boars are 200 pounds (90 kilograms) in weight. Their head length is between 10 and 12 inches (25-30cm), while their body length is between 20 and 30 inches (50-60cm). Wild pigs have short tails, long legs and broad shoulders. A thick layer of fat is found under their skin.

They have strong senses of smell, hearing and sight. These senses are used to find food and detect danger. They can run upto 35 miles an hour (56 km/h), and can jump up to 15 feet (4m) in a single bound. They have sharp teeth and claws. They can be aggressive in defending themselves from predators.

Hunting wild hogs is hard because they are intelligent, fast, and elusive. Hunting wild hogs requires careful observation. The animal may flee if hunters take too long to kill it. Hunters who shoot too soon can kill the animal before it reaches cover.

There are many methods of hunting wild hogs. The most common is shooting. This requires hunters hunting to find the animal, then waiting until it comes within range. Trapping is another option. You can trap hogs by setting traps near water supplies. Traps often include a scent lure like corn meal mixed with peanut butter. When the trap is sprung, the hunter shoots the trapped pig.

Snaring is another method. To catch the pig, snaring uses a rope-covered noose. It is best to catch the pig during its mating season.

Other methods include spearing, netting, and poisoning. For a pig to stop breathing, netting or spearing involves putting a net or spear around its neck. Poisoning is done by injecting the pig with poison.

Wild hog hunters must be prepared to deal with the cold. To stay warm in some areas, hunters can wear snowshoes. Some hunters carry dogs to help them track the animals.
